According to the 2014 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10 out of 11 bicycle accidents with serious injuries reported statewide, showed that the riders were not wearing helmets. To complete the math, and to stress the point, this means that only one of out of all of them had the mind to wear the required safety gear.

While most people think that biking is a relatively safe activity, helmets are crucial in making it safe. Cyclists, after all, are still exposed to the same risks as with any other kind of motorists on the road.

View from the Emergency Services

According to emergency services professionals, it’s usually during the warmer seasons when a lot of cyclists end up in the emergency rooms. This seasonal surge is expected, because people wouldn’t be enjoying a bike ride under the cold rain as much as they would under the summer sun. Unfortunately, when people go out to have fun, they tend to overlook the safety requirements, which lead to the increase in bike-related injuries.

Furthermore, their data shows that adults over 40 years old are usually the ones that get injured often because they don’t use helmets. This behavior is fueled by the belief that aside from bicycles being absolutely safe, injuries from a bicycle accident won’t be as severe as the ones you’ll get from a car accident.

This, of course, is wrong. The severity of a bike injury can just be as serious as any other kind injury from vehicular accidents and, in some cases, be even fatal. A hard fall or tumble from the bike can result to serious consequences.

Possible Legal Help

Hopefully, bike riders will take it upon themselves to observe safety guidelines when riding their bikes as it it doesn’t take much to wear a helmet. In the event of a personal injury as a result of another driver’s negligence on the road, the injured bike rider can file for a personal injury claim with the help of a lawyer, such as those from GWC Law.

Professional legal representation is crucial for these claims if only because of the legal technicalities involved in the process.
